Today I finished working through Oakes's commentary on Galatians for my own work on Galatians. It's a fairly quick read as he doesn't have as much detail as other technical, exegetical commentaries. His strength is in the social and cultural background, and he brings it to bear to good effect in key places. For example, when discussing the admonition to support teachers in Gal 6:6, we tend to think of it in terms of individuals supporting other individuals. However, in the Greco-Roman world, an individual's economic production supported the household of which they were a part. So this verse calls all the households in a house church to support a teacher, not just their own. Check it out for some good nuggets like this one.
